Tehachapi peace rally From the Bakersfield Californian. Since President Bush's speech at the United Nations, some members of Congress have weakened their criticisms of a "pre-emptive strike" into soft support for such action. Working with allies and the U.N. is vital to fostering greater security. But that's not the point. Congressional leadership is needed now to stop the wrongheaded drive by the White House to attack Iraq. It is plainly wrong (and against the U.N. charter) to attack another nation without proof of an imminent intent to harm our country. Bombing Iraq will not make Americans safer and is not in the best interests of this nation. U.S. war plans, leaked to the press, envision an attack concentrated on Baghdad -- a city roughly the size of Los Angeles -- putting four to five million civilians directly in the path of U.S. military forces. Bush told the U.N. General Assembly that "the United States has no quarrel with the Iraqi people." Let's prove that by sparing them our bombs and by seeking solutions based on diplomacy, international cooperation and the rule of law. Join a public peace rally on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day, in Tehachapi City Park (East E Street between South Mojave and Davis Streets) from 3:30 p.m. until dark to say no to war and yes to peace. ANNETTE KIRBY, Tehachapi

Monica Evans informed Thomas's assistant that the group wanted Thomas to reply to their concerns. This past week has been a positive step in building opposition to invading Iraq. Monica stated she was hopeful that the opposition to Iraq will continue to grow. Feel free to call Thomas's Bakersfield office at (661)327-3611 to express your opinions on this issue.
