The Kern County Greens are active,
and our numbers are growing!
Less than 700 Kern County residents voted for a Green Party
candidate in the 2000 elections. In the November 2002 elections,
more than 4,000 Kern County residents voted for at least one Green
Party candidate. That's an almost 600% increase. Clearly
Kern County is ready for Green Politics.
-
Kern County currently has the worst
air quality in the nation.
-
Kern residents are regularly subjected to
agricultural chemicals in our land, air and ground water.
-
Kern ranks among the country's worst 10% of counties in cancer risk
from air pollutants, toxic chemical releases to land, and amount of
pollution from animal wastes. We need to get off those top ten
lists.
-
Kern’s unemployment rate averages double
the rate for California.
-
Local legislators continuously cater to big
business, including industrial agribusiness, at the expense of our
local environment and quality of life.
-
Employment and housing discrimination based
on ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, national origin, and religion
are routinely overlooked or justified by local lawmakers.
-
Kern’s mass transit systems are woefully
inadequate for the expansive area encompassed by the county, and city
and county planners can’t agree on solutions for improvement.
It’s time for a change in Kern County and
our country as a whole. We can no longer afford to ignore the issues of
our environment, social justice, and community based economics.
