Counter-Inauguration in Pershing Square!
Saturday, January 20th, 2001
The counter-inauguration was a huge success, drawing a crowd of thousands who marched from Pershing Square to the Federal Building. Long Beach Greens marched, chanted, handed out flyers, and listened to riveting speakers. The common message of the rally was two-fold: Firstly, that on the doorstep of the 21st Century, this country was not prepared to go back to the conditions of the 19th; and secondly, that the injustices perpetrated in the election of 2000 must bring about a new era of activism the likes of which have not been seen since the civil rights and environmental movements of the 1960's and 70's. The political climate in America today has an amazing capacity to turn off its citizens, to strengthen our cynicism and helplessness, especially after witnessing the recent events surrounding Election 2000. But as Ralph Nader reminded us, if you don't turn on to politics, politics will turn on you. Now is the time for all of us re-invigorate our spirit and our ideals, and take back our democracy. This can be a defeat, or it can be an opportunity - lets make it an opportunity. |
