FOOD 4 THOUGHT

The Green Party of Santa Clara county is pleased to present
a town hall type event that includes a meal and speakers
Saturday May 22-nd.     Details

Primary Election June 8, 2010

NO on 14

The Green Party of California opposes Proposition 14 and recommends a "NO" vote.

The "top two" part of Proposition 14 would have the effect of eliminating the minor parties from the November ballot - a very undemocratic result.

Furthermore, the"open primary" portion would allow partisanship to cross boundaries, i.e., voters from one party could disrupt the selection of a candidate from another party.

YES on 15

The Green Party of California recommends a yes vote on Proposition 15.

Proposition 15 is an inital step in implementing public financing of election campaigns. In this case, just for the California Secretary of State in the 2014 and 2018 fter the current Secretary of State is "termed out."

LETTER
March 24, 2006

Committee on the Judiciary
2138 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Member of the Committee on the Judiciary,

On March 7th, the Green Party of Santa Clara County, representing more than 6,500 voters in the county,
passed a resolution requesting impeachment proceedings against George W. Bush, Richard B. Cheney,
Donald H. Rumsfeld, and Alberto Gonzalez.

It is incumbent on the House Judicial Committee to initiate the impeachment process when
such blatant violations of the United States Constitution are carried out.

With grave concern for the future of our country,

Gerald S. Gras
Member of the County Council
Green Party of Santa Clara County

RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION OF THE GREEN PARTY OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA
in defense of the Constitution of the United States demanding the impeachment of George W. Bush,
Richard B. Cheney and two complicit associates.

Whereas the Declaration of Independence declares securing "unalienable Rights" including
"Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" to be the purpose of government and

Whereas the Constitution of the United States establishes the firm foundation for our rule of law
and its Bill of Rights provides for the precious individual rights and freedoms guaranteed
to all American citizens,

Whereas, in the conduct of their offices, President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney,
Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld, and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales,
in violation of their constitutional oaths to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution" and to
"take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed," have committed any or all of the following
"high Crimes and Misdemeanors:"

1. WARRANTLESS SEARCHES: ordering the National Security Agency to conduct secret warrantless searches and seizures of the private personal communications of American citizens, without oversight by the legislative or judicial branches of the government, in violation of the 4th Amendment of the Constitution and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of the Congress (FISA 1978);

2. TORTURE: authorizing and permitting torture against human beings, in violation of the Geneva Conventions (1864-1949) and the United Nations? Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (1985);

3. INDEFINITE DETENTION: depriving American citizens of their constitutionally guaranteed rights regarding unjust imprisonment and speedy and public trial, in violation of their rights to guaranteed liberty and due process of law in the 5th and 6th Amendments;

4. WAR OF AGGRESSION: launching an illegal, unjust and undeclared war against the sovereign state of Iraq, in violation of Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution and Chapters 1, 6, and 7 of the Charter of the United Nations (1945);

5. USE OF ILLEGAL WEAPONS: authorizing the use of illegal chemical and radioactive weapons in military campaigns, notably white phosphorous and depleted uranium in Iraq, in violation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR 1948);

6. DELIBERATE DECEPTIONS: repeatedly, consciously, and with forethought, lying to the American people and the U.S. Congress by providing false and deceptive rationales for an unjustified and illegal war in Iraq, obstructing justice by destroying evidence, and covering up the truth about the 9-11 attacks;

7. ATTACKING CIVILIANS: authorizing, ordering, and condoning direct military attacks on civilians and civilian homes and communities, thereby causing widespread death, maiming and destruction in Iraq, in violation of Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and

8. VIOLATIONS OF INTERNATIONAL TREATIES: violating and unilaterally abrogating lawful signatory treaties, such as the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (1972) between the United States and Russia, the Treaty of Rome (1950) establishing the International Criminal Court and the Geneva Conventions providing for humane treatment of combatants and civilians, in violation of Article VI of the Constitution acknowledging these treaties to be "the Supreme Law of the Land."

Therefore, the Green Party of Santa Clara County demands the impeachment and consequent removal from office of the four aforementioned officials.

Be it further resolved that the Green Party of Santa Clara County petitions the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress to initiate Impeachment proceedings against all four identified officials.

Be it further resolved that copies of this Resolution be sent to our Congressional representatives.

Text of Speech March 17, 2007

Iraq, assassinations, torture, domestic spying, over 700 overseas military outposts, disgraceful care for returning soldiers --- these are not the trappings of a peaceful democracy! These are the consequences of an imperial policy.

In his book Nemesis - The Last Days Of The American Republic, Chalmers Johnson reminds us,that, like empires before us, the expenditure of resources overseas leads inevitably to shortchanging domestic needs --like the victims of Katrina. This undercuts democracy, in the end producing a military dictatorship or its civilian equivalent.

And what do we have now? - we have an imperial presidency -
  • with a cia and president beyond the control of a congress beholden to big money
  • with important institutions like the judiciary and the press coopted and partisan
  • with religion used as a battle cry justifying war and a clash of civilizations
  • with corporaations unfettered in their greed at the expense of ordinary citizens
We are now seen by the world for what we are, an imperial military empire that sets itself above international law and whose self appointed moral superiority is seen as hypocracy.

Ford's pardon of Nixon set a precedent. The message to future presidents was that you could break the law with impunity. Just look at the collection of lawbreakers we have in the White House today.

Bush and Cheney need to be impeached.
They need to be impeached because they broke national and international law. And, equally importantly, they need to be impeached to put the brakes on an imperial presidency that fronts for our empire.

We may, like Britian, have to give up our empire to save our democracy. Or like Rome, we may lose our way of life in a futile attempt to save our empire.

The choice and challange is before us.

We are here today because we are ready for this fight.
We must prevail for the sake of our children and the children of the world.

Text of Speech March 18, 2006

I am afraid our democracy is slipping away.
I am afraid of a regime of indefinite detentions and torture.
I am afraid of a militarism that ignores the needs of its people.
I am afraid of a mass media that is the propaganda arm of the government.
I am afraid that our children will not be free to worship as they please.
I am afraid of laws by polititians owned by special interests.
I am afraid of rising police power, of spying and the infiltration of peace groups.
I am afraid of fixed elections.
I am afraid of the supression of free speach.
In sum I am afraid our democracy is morphing into fascism.
BUT I am NOT afraid to stand up with you here today to demand our democray, our civil rights and our country back.
And I am NOT afraid to remind our government that we the people are the power and the rulers.
And I am NOT afraid to proclaim the we who are against the war are the majority in this country and we demand an end to this illegal, immoral and murderous enterprise.
