Until recently, having a political mind or even being interested in politics was rather elusive to me. Like much of youth today, I knew politics existed, but did not see how it directly affected my life. With so much corruption in the political arena, it seemed that all politicians were successfully living up to their reputations as greedy and evil villains. However, earning the position of
Associated Students President, gave me direct insight to the positive impact that public officials can create in people’s lives. I have realized that all public officials are not corrupt, and as long as you stay true and connected with the people that you serve, you can create a great deal of positive change.
At Santa Monica College I discovered that I love politics and I love being Student Body President. I love being in a position to take decisive action, work with fellow students, be involved with all the constituents of the college, manage a large budget, be in the public eye. I take the responsibility seriously with which I’ve been entrusted. I’ve discovered that to be a good leader I have to be open-minded and openhearted, clear thinking, informed and articulate. Assuming office at a local level has given me direction to take local action for global problems. For example, I helped coordinate a campaign to encourage students to use alternative transportation such as biking or riding the bus. This has given me direct insight in how to make a positive difference. I have discovered my true calling through these experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
My passion for the environment is deeply engrained in me. From my early days in scouting to my more experienced backpacking trips, I have always felt drawn towards the natural world. While I have discovered what my passion is, now I need the resources to fulfill it. With the tough challenges our world faces, such as global warming, deforestation, mass pollution and animal extinction, I strive to become more involved in the struggle to protect our earth. I recognize that our species has chosen a destructive path, but it is not too late. It is largely up to my generation to choose a path of peace and sustainability.
I hope to bring the unique set of leadership skills that I possess to Green Party Coordinating Committee. I intend to empower leaders to serve on the respective committees of the General Assembly. With my experience in the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, I am well suited for this position and have attended several general assemblies for student organizing and understand the structure quite well. I intend to build the party into a more cohesive and transparent unit where we train leaders for the future.
