Young Green Ruscal Cayangyang appointed to the Vallejo School Board

Young Green Ruscal Cayangyang was appointed to the five-member Vallejo City Unified School District Board of Trustees, January 20th, in 3-1 vote by the Board's other four members, to fill a vacancy on the Board.

In the November 2014 election Cayangyang placed fourth among eight candidates for three seats.  During the election, the candidate that finished second shut down their campaign after learning he could not keep his teaching position and serve on the Board, but finished second anyway and then declined to accept the seat after the election.

"I want to thank the voters and the community for all the support that they have given me throughout this challenging process, I owe you a debt of gratitude," Cayangyang said after being appointed. "I will represent all voters, all people."

Cayangyang, the youngest officeholder in Solano County since the 1970s, ran on a plaform of "safer schools, stronger financial oversight and transparency of school district decisions and advocating fresh ideas brought forward by citizens."

Previously, Cayanyang served on the Napa Valley College Board of Trustees as Student Trustee. Cayangyang also served as Chairman of the City of Vallejo Youth Commission. An activist, he has been involved in Occupy Napa Valley College.

The Solano County Green Party endorsed Cayanyang in 2014. "We believe that Ruscal Cayangyang will bring needed changes, increased transparency and fiscal prudence to our School Board government."

“I am a Green because I am passionate about issues which can unite everyone," said Cayangyang, who became the first green ever holding public office in Solano County. "Issues like public education and sustainability impact everyone’s lives. Being Green enables me to be an independent political voice that can work with anyone.”
