Laura Wells has run as a Green Party candidate for Congress, District 13, in 2018. She also ran for the California offices of state Controller and in 2010 for Governor. Wells registered with the Green Party the year it gained ballot access in 1992. She was a member of the first Green Party County Council in Alameda County and in 2002, she co-founded Green Focus, the GPCA's official newspaper. An advocate for electoral reform, Wells was part of the 2006 campaign steering committee that achieved 69% voter approval of Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) in Oakland. Some of her other key issues include establishing publicly owned banks, taxing the rich, and reforming old Prop 13 to retain its benefits and eliminate its damaging effects on California’s schools and infrastructure. Wells has over 20 years experience in financial systems - investments, pension funds, union dues accounting, and real estate loans. She holds a B.A. from Wayne State University (Detroit, MI, Phi Beta Kappa), and an M.Ed. from Antioch University. She lives in Oakland, and has an adult daughter Natalia. |
