Cathy McKnight (pictured first on the left) was born June 30, 1956 in Connecticut and passed away on December 19, 2015 in Los Angeles. Cathy was raised in Idyllwild and Costa Mesa before going to college in Fresno, majoring in English. She later lived in Venice and worked for Crown Books before moving to the West Hollywood section of Los Angeles and starting her own card company, Cara Scissoria (www.carascissoria.com), featuring satirical collage greeting cards, many of which she donated for Green Party fundraising.
Shakespeare said “Brevity is the soul of wit.” Shakespeare, along with all the great writers, would have loved Cathy’s witty cards, with her brilliantly juxtaposed word play one liners underscoring artistic and often satirical collage creations.
Besides marketing her unique cards to shops all over the country, Cathy also donated them for fundraising for Green Party endeavors like tabling at events. She also generously used the proceeds to create and fund the Petra Kelly Memorial Scholarship, named for the founder of the German Green Party and a role model for many of us. The scholarship was awarded to Los Angeles high school students, one female, one male, who exemplified Green values, such as ecological wisdom, non-violence, grassroots democracy and social justice . Cathy was very passionate about equal rights for women as well.
We are all so fortunate to have had Cathy in our lives as a friend, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, cousin, or colleague. We will never forget her nurturing, caring, and considerate ways, her delicious out of the box sense of humor, her artistic talent that she brought to everything she did, her fierce intelligence and hunger for books and reading, her love for classy vintage collectibles, her affinity for all things Irish, and so many other loving and lovable qualities.
